The Ready To Learn Service is a nationwide attempt using on-air, online and print sources and local support to help parents and early childhood teachers prepare children for success in school.
Services were first launched in 1994, and are conducted by PBS stations, broadcasting high quality PBS KIDS television applications such as Sesame Street to 93 percent of the nation including 93 million homes with 37 million children.
Local channels build partnerships with community organizations such as childcare facilities, schools, libraries, companies, civic groups, and government bureaus.
The Ready To Learn Service's official site clarifies Sesame Street's goals as follows:
Children encourage to
Take beginning steps toward reading, writing, science and mathematics
learn about feelings and how to cope with emotions
enjoy cultural diversity by mimicking people who differ in appearance, activity, or point of view playing with each other, working together, making friends, and solving conflicts
appreciate the arts in a variety of forms including visual art, music, and dancing and create their own artwork as they develop the concept, "I am an artist."
Know about your body and how to keep it healthy and secure
Additional Prepared to Understand television programs include Arthur, Dragon Tales, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Between the Lions, Reading Rainbow, Maya & Miguel, along with Postcards from Buster.
In 2006, PBS launched a string of short advertisements for the prepared to Discover Service, that blended characters from above mentioned PBS KIDS shows. The four were television parodies:
One clip features the sudden re-appearance of extended absent Guy Smiley (Sesame Street) as host of Jeopardy! take-off "Double Get Wordy". Contestants are Cookie Monster and cartoon characters T-Bone (Clifford the Big Red Dog) and Thora (Arthur).
Another features Ernie in an American Idol spoof called "Star Finder".
Yet another features Ernie at a CSI spoof, exploring alongside Ord (Dragon Tales), and an amazing girl. Bert along with the residents of the house, a mom with her son, eventually show up as well. The theme out of Peter Gunn is used as background score.
Another one includes the two Between the Lions personalities Leona and Theo. The segment spoofing the sitcom complete with laugh track, and takes place in a family room, occurs beyond the realm of this show.
Each one of these commercials ends making reference. A block of smaller credits followed, referring to the puppets as "Felt Americans."
